Pathology Tests
What is blood?

Let us keep it simple. Blood is the bodily fluid which keeps us alive. Also blood is the first source of vital health information for doctors. More importantly it is the first inexpensive source.

The main components  are plasma, red blood cells(RBC), white blood cells(WBC), and platelets. Each of these gives an important informant about  health. The excess or deficiency of these is the cause and reason for many a disease.

Why blood test?

In the 70s-80s, a general practitioner or GP would check the pulse to arrive at a conclusion of disease. With the passage of time, diseases have become more complicated. Disease causing microbes have become drug resistant. Mutation takes place within the microbes causing them to become more powerful. The symptoms of the disease can be masked by the microbes. At this stage and point, doctors do not want to take any risk. And they seek more concrete information. The lab test provides the doctors the help and information needed to reach a definitive conclusion. Post the test, the doctor, creates a medical plan of action.

Types of Blood Tests: Reference, Normal and Action needed
  1. CBC or FBC: Complete Blood Count or Full Blood Count: This test tells the doctors vital health information. The numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Low numbers can tell a doctor if a patient is anaemic, infected with a disease, or has any type of cancer.
  2. CBC with Diff: Complete Blood Count with Difference: Similar as CBC, this test tells about the numbers of White Blood Cells. How fighting fit our body is to different diseases.
  3. CMP: Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: This test tells doctors about the functioning of lungs, kidneys and liver. How good or bad they are working.
  4. CRP: C – reactive protein: This test informs the risk of heart disease in a patient
  5. HBa1C: Glycosylated Haemoglobin: This is the blood glucose test. This tells the amount of sugar in your blood. Sugar is important as a body fuel. The risk is if too much is present in the blood it leads to diabetes. Diabetes is one of the root causes of many a debilitating disease.
  6. Lipid Profile: Requiring 8 to 12 hours of fasting, this test informs on the risk of heart disease. The test measures good cholesterol, bad cholesterol and fat content in blood
  7. Renal Panel: This test informs on the functioning and well being of the kidneys.
  8. TSH: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: A thyroid test informs on why a person is having sudden swings in his or her mood. TSH also informs about abnormal rates of ups and downs in heart beats.
  9. Cancer markers: Some common cancer markers are:
  • AFP: Alpha-FetoProtein test is done for liver cancer
  • CA19-9: Cancer marker is used to find the levels of substances which are      secreted by tumour cells in the pancreas which are
  • CA125: This test is done to find out the cancer antigen for cancer of ovaries
  • PSA: This test is done to find out the Prostate-specific antigen

Know About Dengue

Dengue is a kind of fever disease caused by viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. Dengue fever usually causes high fever, skin rashes, headaches and often severe joint and muscle pains. The disease is also known as “break bone fever”. The dengue virus does not spread directly from person to person.

Dengue Symptoms usually begin about four to seven days after the initial infection. Symptoms generally last for about 10 days and can include:
  1. Mild bruising on the skin
  2. Severe headache
  3. Mild to severe vomiting
  4. Severe joint and muscle pains
  5. Skin rashes
  6. Mild to severe Nausea
  7. Sudden high fever
  8. Mild bleeding from the nose or gums
  9. Swollen lymph glands

Dengue Prevention

  1. Do not allow standing water in nearby areas specially water coolers, empty toys, bottles etc
  2. Wear full sleeve clothes or try to cover most of the body part with clothes.
  3. Use good mosquito repellents.
  4. Avoid outdoor activities at the places where there are chances of mosquito bites especially during morning and evening hours.

Recommended Pathology Test

  1. Complete blood count (CBC)—This is advised to check for low platelet count at the later stages of the illness and to detect the decrease in hemoglobin, percentage of red blood cells in blood and red blood cell (RBC) count which may indicate anemia that would occur with blood loss associated with severe dengue fever.
  1. NS1-This test helps in rapid detection of infection on the very first day of fever before antibodies (IgM and IgG) appears after 4-5 days later. NS1 antigen has been found circulating in the sample of infected patients from the first day and up to 9 days after onset of fever. This is a very simple blood test conducted at laboratory for Dengue
  1. Antibody Test – After 4-5 days, body’s immune system produces antibodies like IgM and IgG, so if undergoing dengue test after 5 days Dengue NS1 can be combined with these antibodies.  IgM and IgG are most effective when conductive at least 4 days after the onset of the fever.

Fasting is not required for the above blood tests.

Types of Thalassemia

  • Beta Thalassemia
  • Alpha Thalassemia

Symptoms of Thalassemia

The symptoms of thalassemia can vary. Some of the most common ones include:
  • Bone deformities, especially in the face
  • Dark urine

If this occurs, you probably won’t have symptoms, but you’ll be a carrier of the disease. Some people with thalassemia minor do develop minor symptoms.
If both of your parents are carriers of thalassemia, you have a greater chance of inheriting a more serious form of the disease.

Treatment Options for Thalassemia

  • Some of the treatments include
  • Blood transfusions
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Medications and supplements
  • Possible surgery to remove the spleen or the gall bladder.

Malaria is a Mosquito-Borne Disease caused by a plasmodium parasite and spread by the Anopheles mosquito. The parasite is released into the bloodstream when mosquito bites a person. Once the parasites are in your body, they can travel to the liver. After few days, the parasites enter the bloodstream and start infecting the red blood cells (RBC). Later on, these parasites inside the red blood cells gets multiplied and causes the infected cells to burst open. There is no vaccine available to prevent Malaria.

Symptoms of Malaria

It is a flu-like illness, which begins with a high fever and chills. Other Symptoms include vomiting and nausea, headaches, body pain, weakness and fatigue.

How to Prevent

The treatment of malaria involves the use of prescribed antimalarial medication, mainly Artemisinin Combined  Therapy(ACT).The dosage and type of medication will depend on a variety of factors, including age, type of malaria and in cases of pregnant women.

Top Tips of Preventing Malaria

  • Stay inside when it is dark outside, preferably in a screened or air-conditioned room.
  • Wear protective clothing (long pants and long-sleeved shirts).
  • Use flying-insect spray indoors around sleeping areas.
  • Always use a bed-net impregnated with insecticides
  • Use mosquito repellent

How do you diagnose malaria in a patient?

Microscopic Diagnosis. Malaria parasites can be identified by examining under the microscope a drop of the patient’s blood, spread out as a “blood smear” on a microscope slide. Prior to examination, the specimen is stained (most often with the Giemsa stain) to give the parasites a distinctive appearance. Most often, the Doctor recommends blood test for Malaria Parasite and Malaria Antigen along with Complete Blood Count (CBC) after a few days of initial fever.

Understanding Malaria pathology report

1.Malaria Antigen- It depends on two parameters:
           – Plasmodium falciparum antigen
           – P.vivax/P.malarae/P.ovale antigen
If anyone parameter is positive then Report is Positive.
If Both Are Negative Then Report Is Negative.

2. Malaria Parasite – Anyone can easily check the Report with the Help of the Parameter which is given below:
If Report is Negative then Malaria is NOT SEEN
If Report Is Positive then Malaria NOT SEEN
